Gamelan de Sebatu | Bali, Indonésie : musiques, danses, masques et récits

Located in the centre of the Indonesian island of Bali, Sebatu is a small village with a rich traditional culture. In Bali, every village has its own gamelan. More or less important and virtuoso, with a percussive style with incredibly varied nuances, it is part of everyday life. The one in Sebatu (3,000 inhabitants), located on the slopes of the Batur volcano, is internationally renowned. It is a rare opportunity to hear and discover these artists on our Western stages. Their first appearance in France dates back to 1972.

The first part of the show presents the best of Balinese music and dance. The versatile gamelan Gong Kebyar will modify its instrumentation of gongs and bronze blades to interpret the repertoires of dance styles older than Kebyar. The latter, the pure virtuosity that has marked so many composers around the world and continues to inspire those in Bali, will be represented in the instrumental overture and two impressive Kebyar dance solos. With the voice of the traditional Tandak storyteller and his surtitles, the second part will link aristocratic narrative dances. The royal ballet Legong Kraton 'Lasem' is a peak of refinement and will be extended in a new way: its anti-hero, the king of Lasem (in East Java), will enter the jungle. In this initiatory place, his ego and any duality will be neutralised, via the magnificent and terrible masks of the fauns Jauk, the beast Barong, the witch Rangda and the emblematic Kecak choir of 'vocal percussion', restored to their true meaning and function.
