If you’re looking for an alternative way to explore the city of Dijon, treat yourself to a Segway tour! This electric two-wheeler is a different and amusing option for a family outing in the Burgundy capital.

A Segway trip around the city of dukes

We made the most of a sunny weekend to join a Segway tour organised by Dijon tourist office. This family excursion won favour with our two teenagers who showed more interest than on other tours with commentary. We chose the 45-minute itinerary to discover the key sights of Dijon, starting outside the tourist office on Cour de la Gare.

We attached our helmets and climbed on our Segways. This one-man vehicle consists of a platform between two wheels and is used in a standing position. Its main advantage is that it’s still allowed in pedestrian areas, but gets you around faster, without being noisy..

Benoît, our instructor, gave us a few hints as to how to handle this 21st-century mount: “You lean forward to accelerate and lean back to slow down.” After about fifteen minutes’ practice, off we went, following our guide through the city of dukes! I was a little apprehensive at first, but I soon got the hang of steering this strange contraption. It turned out to be child’s play!

The itinerary through Dijon town centre

From the station, we headed for Darcy park for a very pleasant ride along the park’s alleys which were in full bloom. By then I’d forgotten my initial apprehension and let myself go. As for the delighted teenagers, they were hot on the heels of our guide.

On leaving the park, we passed through Guillaume gate and headed down Rue de la Liberté. We travelled in single file until we reached the pedestrianised historical centre and began zigzagging between the passers-by.

From Place Ducale, the last stage of our urban excursion took us to Rue des Forges and the “famous owl of Dijon”. In turn, we approached the statuette and made a wish as we stroked it with our left hand, as the tradition requires! I made the most of my newfound mastery of the electric racer to accelerate on the way back!
