Bach's admiration for Vivaldi is without doubt the best guarantee of his genius as a violin virtuoso, composer, conductor and theatre director. Untiring and sensitive to tragedy, as demonstrated by his late opera Bajazet, the "red-headed priest" was also one of the pioneers of the solo concerto. Imposing the three-movement "vif-lent-vif" form, he gave the genre countless scores, characterised by communicative exuberance, the dynamic opposition of tutti and soli, and the operatic lyricism of the slow movements: all bursts of energy and expressive effusion.
