Ariane Matiakh & l’Orchestre Dijon Bourgogne

Saint-Saëns's Concerto No. 1 is a marvellous exploration of the expressive possibilities of the cello, with all its registers magnified, uniting its three movements in a single musical flow. The eloquence of the string instrument reputed to be closest to the human voice calls to the stage, latent in Fauré's Suite d'orchestre originally composed for Maeterlinck's illustrious drama. The splendour of the orchestration and the famous 'Sicilienne' dominate this score, complemented in the programme by Ravel's dreamlike plunge, with Ma Mère l'Oye, into the troubled and enchanting world of the child's imagination.
