"CAPTAINS OF APRIL" FILM by MARIA MEIDEROS WITH Italian actor STEFANO ACCORSI
In Portugal, on the night of 24 to 25 April 1974, the radio broadcast a banned song: Grândola. It could have been the insubordination of a rebellious journalist. In fact, it was the programmed signal for a military coup that would change the face of this small country afflicted by decades of archaism and the fate of vast territories in Africa.
To the sound of the voice of the poet José Alfonso, the insurgent troops took over the barracks. At three in the morning, they marched on Lisbon. Shortly after the sad military putsch in Chile, the Carnation Revolution was characterised by the adventurous yet peaceful and lyrical nature of its course.
These 24 hours of revolution are experienced by three characters: two captains and a young woman, a literature professor and journalist.
Presented in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, at the Arcachon Film Festival where it received the Audience Award and at the 2000 Sao Paulo International Film Festival where it won the Best Film Award, Captains of April is Maria De Medeiros' first feature film as a director. It pays tribute to the young soldiers who shook her country out of its long obscurantist slumber.

Their town, badly hit by the financial crisis, is in a state of complete dereliction as its inhabitants struggle to buy enough to survive on a day-to-day basis. Pietro's mother, Teresa (, is forced to cover the debts left to her by her late husband, while the local pizza chef, Ugo (Pippo Delbono), is involved in petty crime. When news comes that an asteroid is about to pass close to Earth and possibly hit it head-on, all hell breaks loose.

NOUS VOULONS LES COLONELS Film by Mario Monicelli, starring Ugo Tognazzi, François Pérrier, Claude Dauphin
Right-wing extremists try to organise a coup d'état in Italy. But their clumsiness and stupidity cause them to fail miserably... The director takes pleasure in describing, in the tone of a biting farce, the disastrous undertakings of activists nostalgic for fascism.
Even though the coup d'état fomented by Tritoni (Ugo Tognazzi) and his neo-fascist accomplices descends into chaos and ridicule, a classic right-wing parliamentary government, opportunely taking advantage of the country's emotions and acting under the guise of maintaining republican public order, nonetheless imposes liberticidal laws such as a ban on strikes, demonstrations and gatherings of more than two people.

"YORK BY THE HEART" by Vincenzo Cirillo & Monique Serna Garnier
From 1 May to 31 May, artist Vincenzo Cirillo and visual artist Monique Serna Garnier will be staging a photographic exhibition on the English city of York, which is twinned with Dijon. Cirillo and Serna have eschewed touristy, technical photography in favour of artistic work that risks failure by following the adventure of the unconscious gesture. Between painting and theatre, in the natural light of the moment, without computer retouching, and without knowing in advance either the locations or the subjects to be photographed, having only twenty minutes each time to take each image.
