D'après une histoire vraie stems from a memory Christian Rizzo has: that of an impromptu men's round that the choreographer saw in Istanbul. By revisiting this memory and adding to it the rhythms and sonic atmosphere produced by two heady drums, the artist reinvents this memory-form and creates a hybrid choreographic style.
Drawing on categories as diverse as Mediterranean folk traditions, rock music, contemporary dance, tribal ritual and spiritual music, D'après une histoire vraie vibrates with a masculinity of its own, one that finds expression far from conventional wisdom.
