Étienne Meyer – Les Traversées Baroques | Domenico Mazzocchi : Prima le parole !

Virgil, Le Tasse, Petrarch: it was as a lover of poetry and language that Domenico Mazzochi (1582-1665), a brilliant contributor to the development of Italian opera, wrote his madrigals. A wealthy gentleman, protected by patrician families, this dilettante of genius perpetuated the spirit of Caccini and Monteverdi by introducing remarkable innovations in dynamic precision, expressiveness and nuance. The subtle vocal balance required in such a repertoire is enhanced by the sonority of the flutes, the cornet à bouquin, the bassoon and the theorbo: a tribute from the music to the "words", and to the Roman civilisation of the 17th century.
