"As part of the Ateliers Vortex summer residency, Emma Riviera went to explore the territories of Burgundy for two months. During her encounters, she transcribed the stories told, collected objects and took photographs.

"To abolish distance even for a brief moment, to be as close as possible to people and things.
Emma Riviera

Emma Riviera's photographic practice focuses on the notion of encounter, whether with a subject or a viewer. The artist seizes the moment of the encounter in order to distort it, to tune it to her vision and her subjectivity. Ambiguity is present, strangeness, humour too. Her approach is intuitive, she lets chance and the unexpected happen, raw and naked. The artist thus explores the border between the norm and the margin to bring out the strange power of the everyday.
It is not so much the photograph as such that makes the work, but its process of creation and display. This is what led the artist to activate his images through performance and orality. Thus, the artist's work is nourished by stories, first told by others encountered in the different territories she explores. This is why she is interested in publishing and narration as a form of monstration that allows her to tell - and thus better show - her images."
