Whisper in my ear
"This high and powerful voice of the people, which resembles that of God, now wants poetry to have the same motto as politics: tolerance and freedom" Victor Hugo, preface to Hernani.
Tonight, Dona Sol is Emilie Adlar's guest on the "Chuchote-moi à l'oreille" programme. She has come to give her testimony and try to make her voice heard, her choices, even if it means appearing radical, even if it means dying: resisting the marriage imposed by Don Ruy Gomez and the pressing desire of Don Carlos, loving an outlaw. But the characters from the play burst into the studio.
Equipped with headphones, you will be both listener and spectator as you experience this tragedy at their side, as you too grapple with questions of honour, power and love.
Inspired by memories - some painful, some dazzling - of reading the classics at school, Audrey Bonnefoy, whose company Des petits pas dans les grands focuses on young audiences, and playwright Mona El Yafi decided to tell the story from the point of view of the female character. Together, they adapted Hernani for five performers, offering a journey between the 16th and 21st centuries where Victor Hugo's alexandrines and contemporary writing meet, creating a hybrid form on the edge of radio drama and theatre.
