An absolute monument of Western music, The Saint John Passion is a summit of drama and emotion. To mark the 300th anniversary of the work's creation, choreographer Sasha Waltz, who is no stranger to choreographed operas, is staging a new version under the musical direction of Leonardo García Alarcón.
When Johann Sebastian Bach presented his Passion in Leipzig in 1724, the score caused a sensation, so revolutionary were the composer's innovations. An Evangelist narrates the story of Christ, singers embody the great moments of his Passion and a choir interprets the crowd and the chorales. Known for her radical aesthetic choices and the power of her gestures, Sasha Waltz seizes on this extraordinary music, in which the most inspired fervour blends with exceptional theatricality, to recount the ultimate sufferings of the Son of Man.
