Leonardo García Alarcón & Cappella Mediterranea | La Passion selon Saint-Matthieu – J. S. Bach

All the superlatives are in order to qualify this deeply moving Passion drama, whose dramatic springs rival those of any opera and in which Bach becomes, in the words of André Suarès, the "Nightingale of the Cross. In two large parts, the Evangelist's sung account of Christ's last works is punctuated by great choruses (some of which are by Luther), vast choruses (including the unforgettable one in the Overture), and moving Arias, the most famous of which, "Erbame dich, mein Gott," evokes the tears of St. Peter after the denial.
