Violin and piano take a back seat to the creativity of Adélaïde Ferrière and her marimba in this virtuoso programme, in which the music seems more alive than ever. As a bonus, an admirable page by the little-known Florence Price.

A work by a seventeen-year-old Bizet, the Symphony in C (1855) certainly bears witness to the influence of Mendelssohn and Gounod, but reveals a naturalness and melodic genius already reminiscent of L'Arlésienne. Bizet? Carmen springs to mind, greeted by Pablo de Sarasate in 1882 with a fantasia for violin that was to remain one of his best-known works. Twelve minutes of instrumental aerobatics, performed on the marimba by Adélaïde Ferrière, who also plays the solo piano part in Gershwin's celebrated Rhapsody in Blue (1924). Jazz energy and languour merge in this page recreated for our ears. Lastly, the Andante moderato (1929) by Florence Price, the first black American woman to be recognised as a composer, is both rare and exciting. Her style, though influenced by Dvorák, features the pentatonic melodies typical of the Afro-American tradition.
