A touchstone of Romantic music, a testamentary cycle in which Schubert's melodic genius is stripped bare, as one strips off one's last garments, the Winterreise depicts in 24 stages the wanderings of a subject in despair, to the end of suffering and solitude. A pallid work, certainly, barely pierced by a few happy reminiscences, in which Schubert seems to transcend musical time to raise the speculative depth. The choice of an old replica pianoforte to dialogue with Thomas Bauer's voice promises a journey as close as possible to Schubert's terrible visions.
