Turandot | Puccini

A street in Shanghai, its walls covered in brightly coloured advertising lights, in the sweltering night air of a tropical atmosphere. For Puccini's Turandot, Emmanuelle Bastet takes her inspiration from contemporary China and reflects on manipulation in modern society.

The crowd has gathered to witness the execution of the Prince of Persia, who has failed to answer the riddles posed by the daughter of the Emperor of China, Turandot. "Cold as a blade", she has vowed to refuse all marriage in order to avenge her grandmother, murdered by a foreign prince. In this opera with strong exotic overtones, unfinished - it took all the skill of composer Franco Alfano to complete the last two scenes presented here - the staging considers the versatility of the people, both victims and instigators of perpetual violence, manipulated by a cruel power in a society of generalised surveillance. Is Turandot real or does she embody this virtual world where images enslave?
