Brad Mehldau is an ebullient and polymorphous artist who never approaches a piano except to demonstrate the inanity of labels. His jazz, mixed with rock, but also with Brazilian and pop rhythms, displays an inventiveness in which the richness of references constantly vies with spontaneity. As a composer for the cinema, including Stanley Kubrick's famous Eyes Wide Shut, he shows a dramatic sense that does not shy away from vocality and lyricism, since this subtle heir of Keith Jarrett or Herbie Hancock has nonetheless assimilated the great Romantic legacy of Schubert, Schumann or Beethoven. A gifted assimilator and admirer of Bach, he also surprises with his contrapuntal play and polytonal irony, shaping his musical material freely, but always with mastery.
