The Consortium Museum is pleased to invite you to a talk by Alexandra Midal on the launch of Architecture / Astrologie by Dan Graham and Jessica Russell, published by Presses du réel in 2025. A collection of columns published in the Italian architecture magazine Domus in 2011-2012, Architecture / Astrologie paints a funny portrait of great architects through the prism of their astrological sign. The buildings of Franck Gehry, Eero Saarinen and Frank L. Wright are deciphered in the light of the alleged characteristics of Pisces, Leo and Gemini. An erudite, offbeat analysis, translated and prefaced by Alexandra Midal, with illustrations by Mieko Mieguro.
This meeting with Alexandra Midal in the Consortium Museum's projection room will give us an opportunity to re-read the work of Dan Graham, who was born in the United States in 1942 and died in 2022, using previously unpublished archive documents. A conceptual artist, critic and theorist, famous for his early conceptual work for magazines, his revolutionary video works and his specific architectural installations, Dan Graham was the founder and director of the John Daniels Gallery (1964-1965), where he presented the first monographic exhibition of Sol LeWitt and showed the work of Donald Judd, Dan Flavin and Robert Smithson. In 1987, he was invited by the Consortium to present a solo exhibition in Dijon.
Alexandra Midal works on the grey areas of popular culture, crossing cinema, design, architecture and the visual arts.
Her publications include La Manufacture du meurtre (Zones/Editions La Découverte, 2018), Design by Accident - For a New History of Design (Sternberg Press, 2019); Antidesign (Epithème); Subliminal on the Edge (Empire, 2024 tbp) and Girls: Hypnotic Facism (Sternberg, 2024 tbp). She designed the exhibitions: "Eames & Hollywood" (ADAM, Brussels, 2016), "Popcorn: Art, Design and Cinema" (MAMC, Saint-Etienne, 2017); "Top secret" (Cinémathèque française, Paris, 2022). And she is the curator of the 28th edition of the Slovenian Design Biennial, in Ljubljana, entitled "Double Agent: Do You Speak Flower?" (Nov 2024-April 2025). She has been teaching at HEAD-Genève HES-SO since 2009.
